I'm Just An Old Chunk Of Coal

I'm Just An Old Chunk Of Coal (click on title or picture for the video)

On face book the following conversation took place.
........thinking.......I may not be perfect, but Jesus thinks I'm to die for!!!!!!
Wow! How profound!LM
I love that!! I am gonna have to use that. ;)
Love it! I still sing "I'm just an old chunk of coal" under my breath at least once a week. Really glad you are on here and my friend!

Isn't the assumption of this conversation that we are somehow redeemable as sinners? We are not so bad that there is something of value in all of us, no, yes, NO!

Isn't there some Pelagianism in this conversation? We are sinners but not so sinful that we are beyond redemption.

I entered the conversation: Charles Page at 6:41am March 23
Art, a chunk of coal is a bad analogy for a sinner. A lump of coal is good for man and has the potential to be a precious stone. A lump of coal is profitable. A sinner is "unprofitable" (Rom 3:12) There is nothing redeemable in man so if you are saved at all it HAS to be grace. Unmerited favor, undeserved favor. You did nothing to earn it. He gave it to you and He did not ask you if you wanted it. The sinner is so dead in sin that he will not even resist God and God will not acknowledge him. There is no connection between the two apart from Christ. He first loved the unloveable!

Amen, my brother, amen.

''Nothing in my hands I bring,
simply to thy cross I cling.''

Salvation is wholly of God. He initiates it, accomplishes it, notwithstanding man's insubordination and stubborn will.

while we were yet sinner Christ died for US. So, yes, it is God's unmerited grace, love, and favor, that has redeemed us, BUT...we were also created in his image and God saw it and it was GOOD, so good that in his infinite wisdom, he chose to redeem us rather than destroy it all and start over. SO, Charles, God loves you, and we are in fact MORE than lumps of coal...

hate to disagree with you, we're still friends but we are less than a lump of coal - a lump of coal has value. God's estimate of us, we are "unprofitable" Romans 3:12
A lump of coal is profitable.

And no God did not say we were good at creation. He said everthing else was good except for man. That does not mean Adam was bad it means God made no comment on Adam about being good.

All else was amoral and Adam was created moral with a choice for good and evil. Adam sinned and so we all are immoral by birth.

What man meant for bad God meant for good! He authored salvation from eternity past.

Johnny Cash sings good music but bad theology. Listen to the song again and see if it is just plain old religious humanism!

This could be the theme song for Semi-Pelagianism!!!

Genesis 1:31
"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was VERY GOOD. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day."
Does the verse above apply to Adam and Eve?

Brother fred
glad you dropped by my blog. It is an honor. I was raised in Tennessee, McMinnville to be exact.
I saw you pastored in TN on your profile.

I have never been challenged on Gen 1:31. This is good! there is a general blessing bestowed on all God created. Each day came and God was specifically pleased with what he had made. There does not seem to be a special comment to man, but a general comment on all he made. Man served a different purpose from all the other creations. Man was a free moral creature and would be tested. Each redeemed creature will hear a final well done in heaven! Christ, the second Adam, heard the Father say "this is my Son in whom I am well pleased."
